Karin eats them to stay alive, and has become stronger over a matter of days. In at least one ending, you lock Karin in the basement, where the others’ dead bodies are, along with others from previous meals. The player character is disturbed by her plans to leave Gregor alive and eat him piece by piece, especially as Gregor is too nice and drugged up to call her out, only begging for a blanket as he succumbs to shock and blood loss. At first she’s just a catty bully, but soon enough she shoos Anatoly out of the cabin, knowing it will be his death, and maims Gregor to eat his limbs. Either way, it’s not a good way to go.Įven worse, Karin becomes more monstrous. Either they drown in the rainfloods, or the player character butchers them as soon as they decide to go. The meat is coming from anyone who leaves the cabin. You may also lose your appetite after the implications become clearer. Karin, however, seems to figure it out and she’s not grossed out. Everyone suspects the truth, but no one wants to address the elephant in the room. Karin asks where the source of meat came from, but the player character insists it’s a secret. Vegetarian Anatoly throws up his breakfast, while Karin and Gregor ask for seconds. Mariah nominates herself when it seems the others will send Anatoly outside.Īfter Mariah leaves, meat appears in the cabin, in little cuts. Everyone discusses what to do, and who could possibly make it outside and brave the floods to either get help or fetch supplies. Fancy cabbage rolls one night, moldy bread with homemade jam the next. No one has the tools to make a temporary raft and risk the waters. No one can leave unless they are willing to risk drowning to make it to the nearest grocery store. The path leading to the cabin is covered in water that one cannot definitely wade through to reach the main roads. They soon call out how badly the player character stinks.Īll should be fine, except that heavy rains flood the area. In the kitchen, talking vegetables called the Chompettes gather to cheer on the player character. He or she can make a mean cabbage roll with tomato sauce, as well as a vegetable stew. The player character hosts them, cooking every night. It seems that they are on vacation in the mountains, preparing to rough it out. The theory is legit, but I am keeping my original analysis up. Note: After I wrote this article, Game Theory came up with an alternative analysis of the game, where they believe Cooking Companions is set in the 1930s and that Baba Yaga is involved. With that said, the visual novel is grabbing my attention, with the promise of no jump scares, just a hint of how human nature can break down when facing dire circumstances. I’m watching a "let’s play" of Cooking Companions from my friend Melody Young because I sure as heck won’t play two horror games in one month. Cooking Companions does that not even bothering to pretend to be a cutesy harem visual romance novel. They manage to toe the line by making you laugh while pondering the more horrific implications. ![]() Others, however, lean into the ridiculous while building up a more gradual horror. Horror games have to walk the line between real scares and some ridiculous B-level scenarios (less jumpscares, thanks).

Earth has been sucked into a black hole1/11/2024 Each of these regions would collapse into a black hole. Hawking and Carr reasoned that in the universe’s first fractions of a second, small fluctuations in its density could have endowed lucky - or unlucky - regions with too much mass. ![]() The original idea dates back to the 1970s with the work of Stephen Hawking and Bernard Carr. “He’s gone further than anyone has gone before.” “It’s exciting,” said Christian Byrnes, a cosmologist at the University of Sussex who helped inspire some of Jedamzik’s arguments. “It would mean that in fact they could be all the dark matter.” “If his results are correct - and it seems to be a careful calculation he’s done - that would put the last nail in the coffin of our own calculation,” said Ali-Haïmoud, who has continued to play with the primordial black hole idea in subsequent papers too. In one of the latest, published last week in the Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics, Karsten Jedamzik, a cosmologist at the University of Montpellier, showed how a large population of primordial black holes could result in collisions that perfectly match what LIGO observes. Now, however, following a flurry of recent papers, the primordial black hole idea appears to have come back to life. The argument was so damning that Kamionkowski said it quenched his own interest in the hypothesis. He urged other researchers to continue to investigate the idea using alternate approaches. He calculated that if the baby universe spawned enough black holes to account for dark matter, then over time, these black holes would settle into binary pairs, orbit each other closer and closer, and merge at rates thousands of times higher than what LIGO observes. “But it wasn’t necessarily crazier than anything else.”Īlas, the flirtation with primordial black holes soured in 2017, after a paper by Yacine Ali-Haïmoud, an astrophysicist at New York University who had previously been on the optimistic Kamionkowski team, examined how this type of black hole should affect LIGO’s detection rate. “Yes, it was a crazy idea,” said Marc Kamionkowski, a cosmologist at Johns Hopkins University whose group came out with one of the many eye-catching papers that explored the possibility in 2016. What if the ingredients we really needed - black holes - were under our noses the whole time? After all, no dark matter particle has shown itself, despite decades of searching. A hidden population of such “primordial” black holes could conceivably constitute dark matter, a hidden thumb on the cosmic scale. But perhaps black holes were also born during the Big Bang itself. ![]() We know that dying stars can make black holes. ![]() The discovery of these strange specimens breathed new life into an old idea - one that had, in recent years, been relegated to the fringe. Moreover, once LIGO turned on and immediately started hearing these sorts of objects merge with each other, astrophysicists realized that there must be more black holes lurking out there than they had thought. These new ones were about 30 solar masses each - not inconceivable, but odd. Previously, the largest star-size black holes had topped out at around 20 times the mass of the sun. So it was a genuine surprise when the first gravitational waves thrummed through detectors at the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) in September 2015. Their very blackness makes it hard to estimate how many black holes inhabit the cosmos and how big they are. Elegant, simple, scarier in the popular imagination than they deserve, and possibly lurking in deep, dark places all around us. The probe and target sequences are then mixed together (Figure 1d), and the probe specifically hybridizes to its complementary sequence on the chromosome. This denaturation step is necessary in order for new hydrogen bonds to form between the target and the probe during the subsequent hybridization step. Next, before any hybridization can occur, both the target and the probe sequences must be denatured with heat or chemicals (Figure 1c). The first step in the process is to make either a fluorescent copy of the probe sequence (Figure 1b, middle column) or a modified copy of the probe sequence that can be rendered fluorescent later in the procedure (Figure 1b, left column). Hydrogen bonds that join the two strands of the DNA helix are represented by black lines. The target DNA-chromosomes on a glass slide-is shown in blue (in the right column). In the figure, the probe sequence, often a piece of cloned DNA, is shown in red. Hybridization occurs when the "magnet" meets the "needle" this requires both a probe and a target, as shown in Figure 1. This search is made much easier if the investigator has a powerful "magnet"-in this case, a fluorescent copy of the DNA sequence of interest. Detecting a DNA sequence can be compared to looking for a needle in a haystack, with the needle being the DNA sequence of interest and the haystack being a set of chromosomes. In fact, most current in situ hybridization is done using FISH procedures ( Trask, 2002 Speicher & Carter, 2005). Soon after Gall and Pardue's work, fluorescent labels quickly replaced radioactive labels in hybridization probes because of their greater safety, stability, and ease of detection ( Rudkin & Stollar, 1977). Who uses grass gis1/11/2024 ![]() P2G (Power to Gas) implementation seems to be the right solution, transforming curtailed energy in hydrogen. The recent diffusion of RES (Renewable Energy Sources), considering the electric energy produced by photovoltaic and wind plants, brought to light the problem of the unpredictable nature of wind and solar energy. Based on this study, despite the advances archived in recent decades, issues related to multi-source, mul-ti-temporal and multi-level analysis, robustness and quality, scalability need to be further studied as they constitute some of the main challenges for remote sensing. This article aims to show the main tools, data, approaches applied for analysis, assessment, mapping and monitoring of LULCC and to investigate some associated challenges and limitations that may influence the performance of future works, through a progressive perspective. Therefore, hundreds of relevant studies available in different databases (Science Direct, Scopus, Google Scholar) demonstrating advances achieved in local, regional and global land cover classification products at different spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions over the past decades were selected and investigated. Providing coherent guidelines, based on literature review, to examine, evaluate and spread such conditions could be a rich contribution. For decades, technological developments and tools of geographic information systems (GIS), remote sensing (RS) and machine learning (ML) since data acquisition, processing and results in diffusion have been investigated to access landscape conditions and hence, different land use and land cover classification systems have been performed at different levels. The LULCC when intense and on a global scale can be catastrophic if not detected and monitored affecting the key aspects of the ecosystem's functions. Studies on land use and land cover changes (LULCC) have been a great concern due to their contribution to the policies formulation and strategic plans in different areas and at different scales.
